We need never pine for larger quarters if we remember this: home is not a self-contained world but a toehold in a larger world. We don’t just live in our houses and apartments. We live in houses and apartments on streets in neighborhoods in communities in towns and in cities. The porch, the front stoop, the sidewalk, the street, the square and the park expand the confines of home beyond the enclosed space of the house or apartment and into the open space of the public realm. The private home is just the smallest in a series of concentric units. Seen in this context, how large does it need to be?

I hate smokers so much!!!!!

Ugghh they are so grossssss! My lungs get tight as soon as I smell it and I can usually smell it before I see it. I’m not that observent. And I just want to bash their brain in for smoking somewhere I have to cross their path… on sidewalks, at the park, by entrances to buildings, on the fucking running trail…. Fucking disgusting! I don’t feel that I should ever have to breathe or smell it ever again. The only reason it’s still legal is money. Money all the poor junkies hand over to big tobacco that gets funneled to politicians and lawyers and fake scientists to do nothing. I would be ok with smoking if the person smoking did it in isolation, fully paid the cost of their future illnesses, and only smoked their own naturally grown tobacco (not the shit that has been engineered to be as addictive as scientifically possible). I support drug testing for nicotine. I think there should be negative social and economic effects. I have almost no sympathy for people who continue to smoke, especially young people who have been educated on the dangers their whole lives. I don’t believe smoking should be allowed in any building, any public space, anywhere that other people can smell it or be exposed to it. Obviously I support smoking bans in bars, restaurants and casinos. I believe that is the next step. And the one after that is no smoking in public places. Second hand and third hand smoke is child abuse. How can anyone justify to themselves? Smoking affects everyone. If you get lung cancer, we all foot the bill. Either with higher premiums on our health insurance, higher medical costs if providers get stuck with the bill, the government if you have medicare or medicaid, etc. Aside from costing actual money and being bad for your health, it’s not polite. It’s inconsiderate to subject other people to something most people find disgusting. “Not polite” is pretty charitable. I could say it’s rude, showing a complete disregard for others’ safety and comfort. It’s so dumb when people say they aren’t addicted. They can quit anytime they want. Riiiiiight, are they even fooling themselves? Another thing people say about letting business owners decide if smoking is allowed or not is “If you don’t like it, go somewhere else.” What if thats the only job you can find? Or the best paying one by far? You are knowingly putting people in a position where they feel like they don’t have a choice. Regulations are needed to protect people against unsafe working conditions sometimes. Yes it would be great if everyone could quite a job that was unsafe. Thats not reality. That’s why we have OSHA. People who want to smoke indoors are junkies. They are vocal. The majority of non smokers are less likely to be involved because the status quo is being exposed to smoke. I hope that the smoking bans in KC wil make smoke free the new normal and I hope that people will feel righteous indignation when some assclown is exposing them to disgusting second hand smoke. Smokers should feel ashamed. They should feel ostracized. They should hide their smoking from their kids, their parents, their friends. Welllllllll that is my rant, all because some fat bitch was sitting in her minivan, at a stop sign (which I think is illegal to park right at a stop sign?), partially blocking my driveway… smoking a cigarette AND THEN THE BITCH LEFT THE BUTT THERE. Come on. And 99% of smokers litter their butts at least sometimes. Now I know I am a freak for the level and intensity of rage I have towards smokers. But I still feel I am right, and no logical person can argue that smoking is good.
